If you ship product in Europe, then you know how difficult the road freight market can be. From Brexit uncertainty to rising transportation costs, shippers face a variety of roadblocks.
Despite operating in different markets on different continents, European shippers and North American shippers experience many of the same challenges, including disruptive technologies, increasing consumer expectations and market volatility.
All of these challenges are exacerbated by the extreme fragmentation of the European road freight market, which — similar to North America — contains a large and diverse carrier base, but also far more languages, cultures and borders.
According to Coyote's new research study, the majority of European shippers work with at least 30 different carriers to cover loads and meet customer demand.
The Fragmented European Freight Market
Many shippers view this fragmentation as problematic, but have had limited success in consolidating their respective carrier bases.
Though nearly half of all respondents indicated a desire to either reduce or maintain the total number of carriers they work with, 32% have actually increased their carrier base over the past five to 10 years.

To help global shippers better understand the unique dynamics and challenges of the EU market, we released exclusive new research covering some of the most pressing topics.
Titled, “The Evolution of Technology + Humanity: Building a Supply Chain for Long-Term Success,” the study combines the results from Coyote Logistics’ own customer research with two unique shipper and carrier surveys, developed in collaboration with third-party research firms.
Together with MakerStreet (headquartered in Amsterdam) and Martec (satellite office in Frankfurt), Coyote Logistics investigated the unique challenges that decision makers across all European markets face.
Shippers and Carriers Experience Similar Challenges
Though they operate on different sides of the supply and demand divide, our studies showed that shippers and carriers are, in large part, facing similar challenges.
Both identified rising costs, increasing complexity, capacity shortage, the need for flexibility and agility, and increased visibility across the supply chain as top roadblocks.
Technology + Humanity = Supply Chain Success
The research also showed that shippers and carriers both believe that the ideal balance between technology and human expertise across supply chain tasks is 60:40, respectively, which reaffirms Coyote’s longstanding position that the two must work together for companies to succeed in an evolving world.
