To help accomplish our large facility relocations, Coyote modeled a custom solution based off their holiday Peak Season support. They coordinated a dedicated pool of contracted carriers, along with on-site representatives. To properly stage a series of warehouse moves, Dealer Tire needed to move high-volumes of inventory on tight schedules without disrupting their normal supply chain operations.
With the help of Coyote’s carefully selected carriers, deep project expertise, and on-site support, Dealer Tire transferred over 160,000 tires-worth of inventory and seamlessly integrated four new warehouses into their network.
THE FULL STORY
Special projects can be a major pain point for even the most efficient shippers. Effectively handling volume surges, irregular routes, inventory shuffling, and short timelines—all while maintaining regular shipping operations—is tough. To reduce the risk of disruption, many savvy shippers turn to 3PL partners for help.
That’s just what Dealer Tire did when faced with opening a series of new-and-improved distribution centers across their network. Each new facility integration would require staging, shipping and stocking tens of thousands of tires, and they would have to happen fast. As a distributor, Dealer Tire’s success is dependent on their ability to deliver to their customers; they could not afford a week of supply chain chaos.
Before working with Coyote, Dealer Tire encountered some issues during the first few warehouse transfers. Simply put, they weren’t getting enough flexibility and efficiency from their previous 3PL provider. With a 55,000-tire inventory transfer in Arizona right around the corner, Dealer Tire decided to take the project out to bid, searching for a 3PL partner capable of providing superior carrier procurement, detailed tracking and on-site support. After a comprehensive RFP process, they selected Coyote Logistics.
Dealer Tire chose Coyote as their primary 3PL provider for special projects. Here’s why:
- Dense network of reliable regional carriers
- Ability to dedicate carriers to the project
- On-site support from specialized reps
- Comprehensive tracking capabilities
- Deep operational experience in time-sensitive projects
- Unmatched customer service
To accomplish this first massive facility relocation, we modeled an integrated solution similar to the Peak operations we use to support UPS during their holiday shipping surge. What does that entail? We dedicate a pool of contracted carriers, deploy on-site Coyote specialists to work hand-in-hand with the shipper and facilitate driver logistics, and assign control teams in the office to oversee the whole project. Drivers check-in hourly, carriers receive daily performance reviews, and all parties participate in end-of-day debriefs to prepare for the next day of shipping.
Since this model helps Coyote match over 12,200 truckloads per day during UPS Peak, we were confident we could develop a similar, yet custom, integrated solution for Dealer Tire. After three days and 285 truckloads, the new Arizona distribution center was fully stocked. The project was completed 24 hours ahead of schedule due to driver and loading efficiencies. Not only did this allow Dealer Tire to resume regular shipping operations faster, but it saved them from paying for two additional shifts of drivers.
Shakaira Wrenn, the Dealer Tire Transportation Manager who oversaw the project, had this to say:
The team agreed—between the on-site Coyote representative and the driver quality they procured for the project, everything went great. In addition to the vital on-site support, Coyote was able to assist with delays in our loading and unloading procedures that caused disruptions across our network. By recognizing and addressing these issues during the project, we were able to implement best practices for similar projects going forward.”
Due to the success of our first project together, Dealer Tire relied on Coyote again for three more subsequent warehouse transfers (with another special project on the horizon in the very near future).
Altogether, Coyote has helped Dealer Tire successfully execute four warehouse transfers, moving over 160,000 tires across over 800 dry van and flatbed full truckload shipments. Three have finished ahead of schedule, allowing Dealer Tire to reduce spend and focus on core operations.
Special shipping projects are rarely easy, but with the help of Coyote’s integrated services, Dealer Tire has been able to make a series of supply chain improvements without disrupting deliveries to their customers. Our dense carrier network, on-site support specialists and expertise in project shipping helped reduce cost, free up internal resources, and drive operational improvements.
